Spend the 4th in Maine

Maine is a wonderful place to visit in the summer. With it’s delicious food (lobster!), gorgeous coastline, breathtaking mountains, and ample culture there is something for everyone. If you have never been there, why not take a “taste test” over the Fourth of July holiday weekend? Fleet can have your feet on the ground in the Pine Tree State in as little as an hour and a half from our base in New York.

Here are some suggested getaways to fill the long weekend with fun:

Eat Well and Be Cultured in Portland
– This seaside town is well known for its artist communities and culinary delights. Take part in local artistry on the First Friday Art Walk the evening of July 1. On Monday the 4th, enjoy a fabulous meal at Grace, housed in gothic style former church that is on the national historic registry, before catching the Stars and Stripes Spectacular fireworks.

Watch the Sunrise in Bar Harbor – Enjoy the wonder of the Maine coast with immediate access to the grandeur of Acadia National Park. Catch an amazing sunrise from the summit of Cadillac Mountain and then enjoy popovers and ice cream at the Jordan Pond House.

Enjoy the Farm Life in Houlton – Maine has over a million and a half acres of farmland, and agriculture is an important part of the economy.  There are many bed and breakfasts throughout the state that can give you a glimpse into Maine’s pastoral life. Or, if you prefer a more celebratory weekend you can head to the Houlton Agricultural Fair to see livestock shows, eat homemade pie, and feel the joy of rural Maine living.

Go on a Moose Safari in Greenville – Moose outnumber human beings in north central Maine. Spend the weekend at The Evergreen Lodge where you can go fishing and boating on Moosehead Lake – or take a guided moose safari tour by canoe. Outdoor enthusiasts will love the hiking, birding, and even white water rafting.

Memorial Day Getaways

If you are looking to get more out the long weekend from May 28-30, we suggest taking to heart the true meaning behind the federal holiday. Remembering those who have served this country can be a fun learning experience. Here are three ways you and the whole family can enjoy:

  1. Visit Battle Sites It’s a great way to get outside and enjoy the weather while paying homage to our veterans. The Civil War battle sites of Gettysburg, PA and Harpers Ferry, WV as well as the site of Revolutionary War battle of Lexington and Concord are all within quick reach when you fly charter from any point in the Northeast.
  2. Tour Military Aviation History The Collings Foundation, with one of its bases in Stow, MA, works to preserve aviation history by keeping military aircraft in working condition. You can tour their collection and even go for a flight in a WWII bomber and fighter aircraft.
  3. Climb Aboard Old Ironsides The USS Constitution, the world’s oldest commissioned warship afloat, promotes the United States Navy and America’s naval heritage – and it’s open for tours on May 30th (as well as throughout the summer season). Walk the Freedom Trail to the ship where you can learn about the realities of daily life at sea.

Gifts for the Friend On-the-Go

Trying to figure out what gifts to give your loved ones is not always easy – especially if you are trying to find something perfect for the person whose accessories are usually limited to a suitcase and one small carry-on item!

Every traveler’s one over-whelming lament is lack of space. To that end, if you have family that is flying to visit you this holiday, it’s a sure bet that you don’t want to send them home with something that won’t fit into their luggage. This year, we have a few suggestions to help you play Santa for the loved one who is always on the move.

Electronic readers

Whether it’s an Amazon Kindle or a Sony Reader, these devices are fabulous to give the gift of literature without the weight of a library. Every traveler will love the chance to dive into a new release without having to lug around the hard-cover version.

Eagle Creek Pack-It Compressors

These are perfect stocking stuffers for the traveler. They may not seem like the fanciest gift, but anyone who has ever tried sitting on a suitcase to get it zipped can rejoice at these
air compressor bags that reduce bulky sweaters to little more than an inch of space.

Power Mat

Almost every traveler has arrived at a destination only to realize that they have forgotten the charger to their cell phone, i-Pod or their child’s portable Nintendo. Help eliminate this agony by giving them the Power Mat wireless charging station. Capable of recharging many different devices wirelessly, this small but powerful gizmo should become a staple in the traveler’s carry-on very quickly.

Spa Services

Anyone who travels frequently will tell you that being able to salvage a few quiet hours of relaxation can make the difference between getting there and getting there without pulling out your hair. During the holidays, a great spa to visit is the Chocolate Spa at Hotel Hershey. Their decadent themed treatments are the perfect gift to find under the tree. Fleet can fly there in an hour and your loved one will be pampered all afternoon and home by dinner.

Private Air Travel

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention that giving the gift of a private Fleet Aviation charter flight is always well-received! For anyone who has struggled with endless commercial airline delays, over-crowded airports and security lines that go for miles, the gift of their own private aircraft for a day is a dream come true.

Call or visit us online today and we can help you purchase a trip guaranteed to delight the frequent traveler in your life.

Stop Blaming Travelers for Their Stress. A Real Solution to Holiday Travel Woes.

Posted: December 23rd, 2009 | Author: Ellen S. | Filed under: Family and Leisure Travel, Holiday Travel | Tags: , , , , | Comments Off

This time of year, news stories abound about holiday travel madness. From near-riots at airports  to tips on how to travel smart, there is no shortage of commentary on end-of-year trips. Every one seems to point fingers at the same symptoms – but the solutions always rest with the victims: the travelers.

This morning, an NPR report laid out what is driving the crush with major airlines. It follows logically that if there are fewer passengers flying (a million less this year than last, and 5 million fewer than the year before that) then the airlines should be offering fewer flights – you know, matching supply with demand. But that’s not the case. The airlines have been cutting routes and flights well before this holiday season – it’s been happening year over year, surpassing the decrease supply of travelers. To the point where although there are fewer passengers overall, flights will be more crowded, boarding will take much longer, and the competition for carry-on space will be more intense. Not to mention the competition for re-routing should something go amiss with an original itinerary. Plus, in an attempt to squeeze even more out of that NPR has dubbed “obligation trips” where travelers are forced force to all be in transit at the same time in order to visit family they don’t see during the year, some airlines are adding additional “holiday” travel fees. Yes, that’s on top of the already existing baggage fees, pillow fees, head set fees, food fees, and so on.

So what’s the solution? Planning ahead? Having more patience? NPR’s answer is to “Travel Light and Carry Cash.” Why do the answers always seem to blame the traveler, as if they are the cause of their own holiday stress? What about systematic alternatives? Well, we have an obvious one at our fingertips: charter.

When it comes to “obligation trips,” most often people aren’t flying from major city to city. They are traveling back home to where their folks live, probably somewhere off the beaten path that requires dragging the whole family through connections, extended ground transportation, and lugging of gifts/extra baggage. When traveling regionally – an area we define as having a 500-mile radius – chartering a plane can help you overcome most of the holiday travel woes. And, yes, you can do it affordably.

Just to join in the holiday list fun: Here are our 10 top reasons why charter trumps major airlines for family holiday travel:
  1. Avoid crowded airports, connections, other cranky travelers, and their germs
  2. Arrive only minutes before takeoff, so your kids don’t get restless in the airport
  3. Bring your wrapped gifts with you. Even if they are snow globes!
  4. Pack your toiletries as you’d like. No fussing with 3oz travel sizes.
  5. No fretting over overhead storage or waiting for baggage claim. Someone else carries and stows your luggage for you, and it’s right there when you deplane
  6. You pay by the plane not the passenger, so a family of 4 or 5 can comfortably travel at per-person rates that can beat airline prices
  7. Prices don’t go up for holiday travel. Or even last-minute booking. At Fleet, our billing is entirely WYSIWYG whether you book a month or a day in advance.
  8. Never risk getting stuck on the tarmac for hours. You’re in charge – so if you want to head back to the terminal, it’s your choice.
  9. Fly under the same FAA regulations as major airlines. Yes – it is safe!
  10. Drastically reduce your total travel time. Always fly direct and completely on your schedule– leave closer to home, land closer to where you want to be
There surely are other system-wide solutions to the holiday travel complaints we hear. Charter is just one.
Whichever way you choose, we wish you safe travels and a very happy holiday season!

Looking for Snow? Comparing charter to conventional travel options for holiday travel

Posted: December 11th, 2009 | Author: Ellen S. | Filed under: Charter v. Conventional Travel, Destinations, Family and Leisure Travel, Holiday Travel | Tags: , , | 1 Comment »
This week, I pulled together an email to our existing clients and contacts. Although we are working every day to add more weekday travelers and business clients, the reality is: Fleet’s most popular itineraries continue to be for customers traveling for leisure trips and/or on holiday weekends. Sometimes people forget that flying charter isn’t just high value in the summer months. With our known-ice Cirrus and twin-engine aircraft, clients travel with confidence that they are flying safely, even in the middle of winter. I would be remiss in my duties if I didn’t send a note out prior to the Christmas/New Years rush to remind folks that traveling by charter is a great option for the winter holidays.

But – as I pulled together data, it began to take form of a comparison between flying Fleet or taking convention modes of travel to winter destinations. And what started as a practical activity about where to find a winter wonderland in December turned into an exercise of insight for me…

Inspired by the annual National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) report on US locations most likely to have snow by the New Year, I looked up destinations in our region (Mid-Atlantic and New England).  I selected 4 different locations – each in a different state – to compare between flying charter and either driving or flying on a major airline. The results proved what has long been tossed around our office as anecdotally true – when you are traveling to hard-to-reach destinations and you value your time, money and stress levels, flying private is truly the best option.

Below, I’ve highlighted each of these locations- giving a brief overview on the destination’s appeal, outlining potential conventional travel options, and demonstrating how flying direct via private aircraft is a better value for your time and money.  (Pricing is as of December 2009)

Montpelier, Vermont
Montpelier is New England’s snowiest capital city. According to the NCDC, there’s an amazing 93% chance you’ll find at least one inch of snow there on New Year’s day, and a 41% chance the snow will be at least 10 inches deep. More like a quaint New England town than a bustling city, Montpelier boasts many historical sites and delicious restaurants. Additionally, Mad River Glen ski resort is just around the corner.

Conventional Travel Options: Major airlines don’t even service Montpelier, and you’d have to fly into Burlington and drive 45 minutes. A popular carrier for this route is JetBlue – but their only flight that allows you to work a full day on Friday in NY doesn’t land in Vermont until midnight, and will cost each traveler upwards of $500 and require a minimum of 3.5 hours of your time. Driving would take over 4 hours whether you were leaving from Boston or NY – and that’s without traffic.

When you fly Fleet, sample pricing for round-trip, direct service to Montpelier (MPV) is:
>> Cirrus from the Boston area (3 ppl): $833 per person, travel time: 1 hour
>> Twin Engine from NYC area (5 ppl): $667 per person, travel time: 1:10 hr

Fly private and work a full day on Friday and still be at the lodge by dinner.

Lebanon, New Hampshire
The NCDC says Lebanon, located near the New Hampshire/Vermont border,  has at least an inch of snow at the end of December 85% of the time, and there’s a 30% chance there’ll be 10 inches of snow or more on December 31. Picturesque Lebanon is not only the home to the renowned Dartmouth Medical School, but it is where you’ll find the Storrs Hill ski jump training center where you can learn to catch some serious air. The town was named Sports Illustrated’s Sportstown for all of New Hampshire in 2004 and is a prime destination if you enjoy outdoor winter activities.

Conventional Travel Options: Lebanon’s closest airport serviced by major airlines is in Manchester, NH, an hour and a half drive away. At that rate, you might as well drive from your departure location – Lebanon is 3:25 from Boston and just under 4 hours from New York by car. Which is still not a great deal when you are trying to maximize your weekend away.

When you fly Fleet, sample pricing for round-trip, direct service to Lebanon (LEB) is:
>> Cirrus from Boston area (3 ppl): $700 per person, travel time: 52 minutes
>> Twin Engine from NYC area (5 ppl): $580 per person, travel time: 1 hour

Fly private you can extend your weekend by allowing you to relax all day Sunday, and leave Monday in time to be at your desk for a 9am meeting. We fly 100% on your schedule.

Massena, New York
Nicknamed the “Gateway to the Fourth Coast”, Massena is situated on the St. Lawrence River, on the Canadian border, and has snow on Christmas day 77% of the time, with a 23% chance that you’ll encounter 10 inches or more. Beyond taking in the beautiful views and breathtaking landscape at Roger Moses State Park, you can enjoy great snow-shoeing in nearby Potsdam.

Conventional Travel Options: To reach Massena by car, you’d log over 7 hours from New York City and nearly 8 from the Boston area. You can’t reach this gem of a location via major airlines unless you wanted to drive over 3 hours to Burlington VT.

When you fly Fleet, sample pricing for round-trip, direct service to Massena (MSS) is:
>> Cirrus from Boston area (3 ppl): $1233 per person, travel time: 1:25 hours
>> Twin Engine from NYC area (5 ppl): $1300 per person, travel time: 1:22 hours

Fly private and forget fretting about traffic jams or accidents on the road that will exponentially extend your travel time. The view is great from above the clouds.

Caribou, Maine
According to the NCDC, there’s an amazing 97% chance of snow on the ground in Caribou come Christmas. In fact, there’s a 57% chance there’ll be 10 inches or more of the fluffy white stuff. Caribou, located 150 miles from Maine’s Atlantic coast and 12 miles south of New Brunswick, Canada, receives about 110 inches of snow each year and is home to the Maine Winter Sports Center with some of the top snow mobiling and cross country skiing in the country.

Conventional Travel Options: If you were to try to reach Caribou by conventional travel you’d be driving a whopping 10 hours from New York and 8 hours from Boston.  There are no non-stop flights to the area from New York, and if you were to attempt flying on a major airline after work on Friday, you’d be facing a 14 hour one-way journey with 2 stops just to reach Presque Isle, a half hour away!  Definitely not the start to a stress free getaway.

When you fly Fleet, sample pricing for round-trip, direct service to Caribou (CAR) is:
>> Cirrus from the Boston area (3 ppl): $1422 per person, travel time: 2 hours
>> Twin Engine from the NYC area (5 ppl): $1317 per person, travel time: 2:30 hours

Fly private and you can arrive just minutes before departure and skip the lines, crowds, connections and hassle.

So this holiday, when you are planning the perfect respite from your daily life, think about what your time is worth to you. How many times have you arrived back home and exclaimed “I need a vacation from my vacation!” because you are so exhausted from the journey? When you fly Fleet, you’ll add hours and even days to your quality time with friends and family without missing a beat back home. You’ll avoid the holiday crush at conventional airports, minimize your travel time and – most importantly -  maximize your unwinding time.
